Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”
Let’s try and answer this question: “Who were the men Jesus was talking to when He gave this command? They were just ordinary guys.
They weren’t famous people.. they were known leaders.. they weren’t Bible teachers.
They were just regular people that Jesus called to do BIG Things.
Listen to me carefully. The same is true for YOU! Jesus sees us just as we are. He sees the potential we have for big influence and for great things when we choose to follow Him.
Just as Jesus sent these ordinary fishermen out to find other people and tell them about Him… he calls us to do the same. HE CALLS US TO USE OUR GIFTS AND INFLUENCES TO SHARE HIM WITH OTHERS. Who in your life could you share a little bit about Jesus with? Who can you share a helpful post, a word of encouragement something that shares Jesus with them? Commit to starting a conversation with them about Him this week..
Have you ever been treated poorly? .. disrespected? How did you feel towards the person that treated you that way? Chances are you made the choice to distance yourself from any influence that they had in your life.
One of the fastest ways to lose OUR influence with others is to treat them poorly. When we are unkind.. when we are disrespectful.. when we’re hurtful to the people around us .. whatever influence we may have had with them gets damaged.. Instead of losing the chance to make a difference for the better, we can commit to following this command from Jesus. “DO TO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD LIKE THEM TO DO TO YOU.” (Luke 6:31). IF we want to be treated well, than THAT’S the way we should treat others.
listen.. making this simple shift in the way we interact with others will not only help us hold our influence, it will influence others to treat those around THEM the same way. This week.. here’s your challenge.. commit to being the one who STARTS the trend of treating others the way YOU want to be treated.
Mark 12:31 - The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”
When you read Mark 12.. you get to the point where Jesus is asked “what is the most important commandment”
Or .. it could have been asked this way: -- what is the MOST important thing we can do as followers of God to show our belief in Him. Is it going to church? .. Is it giving the most money? Is it bragging about how we do both? Is it telling people how bad they are because they aren’t following the rules in the bible?
Nope. Jesus says it incredibly simple: To love others in the same way we love ourselves.
To give the same care.. the same kindness.. the same respect to others that we want for ourselves. It’s a lesson I’m teaching my 10 year son. It’s a lesson I have to be reminded of at 40.
Can you stop and imagine for a second how different our families.. our schools, our towns/areas that we live in.. even our church.. would look if we started loving others the way we love ourselves. Oh.. trust me.. it’s hard sometimes. But if that was something we were reminded of each and every day.. and then not just reminded.. but we acted on the change.. how quickly would our world change??
Stop today.. and in a notebook.. a journal.. your Note App on your phone.. make a list of ways you want others to treat you.. and sincerely .. honestly.. do it. What are ways that people can show you .. that they love and respect and appreciate you.
Now.. save that note. Print it off.. Type it up.. post it somewhere that you can see it all the time. Now try and treat others in your life that same way this week.
Know that I’m praying for you.. know that I and our leadership team are here for you to listen, talk, and help.
See you tomorrow for Day 4 of Purpose.
In Titus 3:14 we read this:
Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives.
What was the last time you devoted yourself to something? When was the last time you gave ALL your time, your attention and dedication to something… Maybe it was a sport.. hockey, basketball.. baseball. Maybe it was some sort of educational thing.. Maybe it was a hobby.. maybe it was becoming a master at Fortnite....
The truth is this.. we devote ourselves to things all the time. The HARD truth is .. we devote our time, energy and patience to things and events we CARE about… I’ll let that sink in for a bit..
Paul is reminding us here to devote ourselves to the most important thing: Doing what is good. (Not so that we can feel good about ourselves or look good in God’s eyes..)
When we give our time, energy and attention to doing what’s good for ourselves and others, we’ll be devoting our lives to using our influence for good.
So.. Where are you devoting the MOST of your energy? Maybe it’s time to stop and ask God to help you shift your focus on doing what’s good?

Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.
1 Timothy 4:12 NLT
Hey.. OK.. So.. it is REALLY easy to look at today’s reading of 1 Tim 4:12 and focus only on the first part… but we ‘d be missing so much if we didn’t look at the second half of the verse too. Look at it again.. no really.. here.. I’ll even put it up for you..
The second half calls us to SET AN EXAMPLE for others in the words we say, the way we live, HOW we show our love.. and even the way we live out our faith.
Listen… here’s the “dad voice” coming out… we have the responsibility to use what influence we have to set a good example for the people around us.
Stop and think for a second. No really.. take a quick moment (pause me if you have to..) and think this through. think about the kind of example you want to set for others. Do you want to be patient.. do you want to be a faithful friend.. do you want to be kind and generous?
This week.. here’s your challenge. Take ONE step to set the example for others.
OH.. and here’s the thing. It SHOULD be really easy.. cause we can’t go anywhere right now. So.. practice by setting an example for those closest to you.. your family. BUT.. don’t let this stop you either from reaching out to your friends .. or someone at the store as you walk by.. or whoever…
